A Few Words From a Degree Apprentice:

I think people should know not to put aside the offer of joining a reserve list. In my apprenticeship cohort, 30% of us (about 80) came from the reserve list: anything can happen on results day and at the end of the day once you’ve started, no one cares where you came from or how you got here so it’s just as worth keeping an eye out on contact from companies if they have one, it’s 100% worth joining the list, even if you think your chances are tiny, you could end up with even more places to choose from.

Secondly, for people who are looking to apply in the coming year, don’t worry too much if you don’t have masses of experience. I think nowadays it seems like everyone’s super on it with their work experience and courses and learning, but truth is most people in the industry aren’t. Everyone has to start from somewhere and sometimes it’s just your mindset and willingness to learn which sets you apart from other applicants. Of course youve got a while to go, so get looking for experience to do this summer!! But it’s not be all and end all if you don’t have a whole bunch lined up to talk about in interviews, as long as you have the open mindedness and seem eager to learn more, that’s what they care about most.

Finally, just good luck in all your exams. For those of you who have applied/are holding offers/still waiting, the next part is still to come: don’t let rejections or long waiting games distract you from still trying to do well in exams. Similarly, I think it is worth aiming high instead just doing the minimum to scrape your apprenticeship requirement, you never know what will happen in the future and it’s good to keep your options open.
